Word on the street says that there are a lot of grazers out there.

I am a grazer. Through and through.

I knew today was going to be quiet and uneventful – The perfect recipe for a grazing day. So I decided to give myself a challenge: Try to photograph everything I ate for the day.

I wasn’t aiming to capture perfect portions or every bite since I grab chunks, spoonfuls and nibbles rather than measuring or plating out 3/4 of what I eat. I just wanted to see if I could capture a glimpse of each food thing that entered my mouth today.

Verdict: Almost successful.

This was tough! I’m impressed with people who can actually capture every.single.thing they eat (even more impressed with those that can actually plate their snacks and bites before eating them. I do not have enough patience for that). I definitely forgot a few things along the way but I think I got the majority.

SO here’s a sample of A Day in the Kitchen of a Grazer (This is a sample of my habits, not necessarily of my regular daily food choices. Though most days are similar enough, my food choices do have quite the day-to-day variability)

Warning: the quality and appeal of today’s food is rough. Avert your eyes or scroll past quickly as needed.

Breakfast

As I’ve been mentioning lately, smoothies are the name of the game in the mornings. This morning was no different on that front. Before said smoothie is made, a pre-smoothie snack always seems to happen. Don’t ask me why, weird habit.

Today’s contenders: leftover grocery store sushi

001

…and a chunk ripped off a slice of bread.

007

Which was then dipped in roasted red pepper hummus.

008

Then finally the smoothie got made. A coffee cocoa spinach strawberry smoothie to be exact.

009

Vanilla soy protein powder + chilled coffee + almond milk + cocoa powder + spinach + a handful of large frozen strawberries + ice + stevia + the gums

020

This one actually turned out perfectly. Best smoothie I’ve had in a long time. No idea what I did differently but I’ll likely be making this exact combo again tomorrow with crossed fingers.

Perfection smoothie was paired with hot green tea.

026

Followed by a splash of coffee with vanilla creamer.

030

Enjoy my ten course breakfast?

Mid-Morning

After a little digestion time I was in the mood for baking. I’ve been meaning to make cornbread for a while now and it was finally time.

033

Except…this cornbread was awful. AWFUL. I was half following a couple recipes, half winging it, full out failing miserably.

035

I tried sampling some with butter and jam but it was still pretty inedible. I wrapped the rest up and threw it in the freezer since I prefer to Waste Not…but I’m really not sure how I’m going to be able to revive that mess.

038

For sweet redemption (since my first baking attempt definitely didn’t satisfy any baking urgers), I decided to use up the last of my peanut flour in the best way possible since I can’t buy it around here and it will be a while until I see some in my pantry again.

046

In an Inside Out Peanut Butter Cup Cake! I’ve made it before with amazing results and today was no different. I saved this baby for later though.

First it was time for …

Lunch

Since the oven was already hot and ready from my baking attempts, I decided to throw in an acorn squash for lunch. I ate some of this mashed beauty with a pat of light margarine alongside a kale salad, a hard boiled egg and another chunk of this morning’s bread slice with plain hummus.

040

Then it was time for…

Workout

I did a duo sesh – long treadmill session followed by Jillian Michaels Shred. The in-between required a breather… and a grazing session.

The rest of this morning’s bread slice was dipped straight into this jar of salsa. And here’s where a picture fail happens – I missed getting a shot of the rice crackers and triscuits that also got drowned in the salsa.

052

I didn’t forget to grab a shot of the acorn squash I ate with a spoonful of peanut butter though. Well… I almost did.

059

There were a few spoonfuls into here today… and into my other natural (aka not-so-fake) peanut butter jar. And I was going to take a break from peanut butter this week… maybe tomorrow. Or never. Whatever.

010

Dinner

When dinner finally rolled in I was in the mood to mess around with my panini press. Pizza quesadillas were born – aka jarred pasta sauce and cheddar squished into a wrap. Culinary expertise right here.

067

I didn’t actually eat these. I just made them for kicks, chopped them up and threw them in the fridge. I eventually had a quarter or two though. Half the cheese ran right out so they were a tad on the bland side.

What I did eat for dinner: more kale salad topped with chopped cheddar and hard boiled egg. With a side of rice crackers topped with pasta sauce and cheese. I guess I was in a pizza mood tonight. Okay so more of a cheese mood than anything. Sometimes there’s just nothing better than cheddar.

072

Evening

The time when grazing can really go haywire. This must be why they say you’re not supposed to eat after a certain hour. I don’t agree with the rule but I do understand it… It’s not because your body can’t metabolize it but it’s because all caution goes to the wind at night. I could easily take in a day’s worth of food post dinner on a lonely, boring night of snacking!

This evening started out with a nice chunk of my earlier made peanut butter cup cake (which is actually more like a thick, creamy peanut butter pudding and I’m a-okay with that!) served with peach yogurt.

079

I don’t like “Fruit Bottom” yogurts because that “fruit” is just weird jelly. I scoop it out and trash it. The yogurt is already sweet and flavoured without having to stir the gunk in anyway.

086

I also had one last tiny Tbsp of peanut flour that I was saving specifically for THIS:

091

Peanut butter “ice cream”- aka frozen almond milk cubes blended with sweetener, peanut flour and a splash of liquid almond milk. Not the most successful ice creamy texture when trying to do this with my little Magic Bullet but the taste was darn fine.

I also dipped a couple dried prunes into my “ice cream”.

097

I let a little time go by before digging into an apple.

101

And then some apple and orange slices. With peanut butter.

108

I then scrapped picture-taking because I already downloaded the pictures to my computer and didn’t feel like doing another download session to prove that I just finished off: A bunch of cold acorn squash; a mug of peppermint tea with cocoa; and a container of silken tofu blended with cocoa, stevia and frozen raspberries that had instant oats stirred into it and was topped with peanut flour drizzle.

And I’m spent. Time for the grazing monster to go to bed.

[With all this recent talk about portions, people not eating enough when showing their daily meals etc etc, please remember: What you see on the plate or in the bowl is what I ate but not necessarily the amount I ate. In many cases I had quite a bit more than what is shown. I just ate it before it made it onto the plate ;).]

Are you a grazer or a mainly meals eater?
I think the fact that I’m not on much of a schedule right now definitely contributes to my grazing habits. Some days I probably eat ten times a day. On a schedule I do a little better… either way I’m a snacker at heart though :)

So who got a prank played on them today?

My friend sent out a mass text late last night telling everyone he won a car in Tim Horton’s Roll Up the Rim gig. Everybody’s obsessed with Roll Up the Rim around here so this would be a big deal. I almost fell for it but I was skeptical. Not because it was April 1st (definitely didn’t even realize at that point) but because he’s just the type of person to say something like that to be funny. I demanded a proof pic. This was his Facebook picture today:

timhos

Hardy har har.

The only other prank I experienced today was People Style Watch magazine trying to tell me that Snakeskin is in this Spring. I’m down with my animal print but snakeskin is one trend I highly doubt I’ll be wearing on my body any time soon.

043

While reading about strange fashion trends this morning, I ate a Julie-fied egg white omelette (egg whites mixed with cinnamon, vanilla, pinch baking powder) stuffed with peanut butter hummus and SF raspberry jam.

004

So.

020

Darn.

031

Delicious.

035

So we’re here at Friday already. So we’re here at APRIL already!
This week flew by.
This MONTH flew by.
Heck, this whole SEMESTER flew by, this is the last full week of classes of winter term! I don’t believe it. I do have one last class Monday evening but other than that, dunzo. Well, minus the essay I have due next week (should probably get on that sometime soon…) and the 4 exams spread throughout the month.
But otherwise… Adios Undergrad?!? What?!

Aside from finishing up most of my classes, what else went down this week?

A bit of Hair Curling Action.
For those of you interested in how the Sultra curling iron works (just got it for my birthday), here’s what came out of my second hair curling attempt:

046

049

It does take some getting used to and I’m still no pro but the whole head of hair took about 10 minutes to do.

Word of advice though if you ever get one for yourself, or any high heat styling tool for that matter– Use as directed & BE Careful.

Aka if they give you a heat glove, use it. Not that that protects forearms…

111

I got this burn the first time I used it and it is still very much unhealed. That thing is HOT.

Along with unsightly burns, I also suffered a case of pink eye this week. I looked very much not at all like this.

tumblr_lbvpjodSyc1qcimfxo1_500_large
(weheartit)

It was much uglier and nastier. Who gets pink eye, seriously? I’ve been putting drops in all week but the whole top half of my eye is still a bit yellow and red. The never-ending pink eye? Or something worse… I don’t know if I want to know.

Now that we’ve got that nasty body talk out of the way, no better way to follow it than with some appetizing foods, am I right?

Along with trying out my birthday prezzie curling iron, I also tried out my new peanut flour…by making an Inside-Out Peanut Butter Cup Cake.

195

If you have access to a bag of peanut flour, you must make this right now. Just do it. I demolished half of this while it was still piping hot from the oven.

And somehow managed to save the rest for later.

056

And speaking of flours, I also played around with some coconut flour using this gluten and dairy free muffin recipe as a guide.

Except mine were definitely not muffins. Introducing the Coconut Blobs.

1 cup coconut flour
2 T coconut oil, melted
1 T agave nectar
1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp cinnamon
2 egg whites
dash sea salt
Roll into blobs. If you want to be like me, throw them into a muffin tin. Totally unnecessary though. Just a baking sheet would do.
Bake at 350 for ~15 minutes. Make 10-12 blobs.

026

Coconut flour is really hard to bake with. I think I’m sticking with pancakes for the remainder of the stash.

In order to try to fix my messed up eye, this week I’ve been eating my weight in roasted squash, cereal, and hummus.

Oh wait, that was just to fix my appetite.

I hate this cereal. It’s only in my life because my brother likes it so it has to be in the cupboard at all times. I do not like it but somehow my hand finds itself in this box nearly every day. Rude.

011

Costco hummus stash just about fully demolished.

001

I roasted the biggest buttercup squash of life this week and ate it at almost every meal. Along with a lot of spinach apparently.

021

004

023

I’ve been a bit squash deprived lately. So glad it’s back in my life.

What’s the Best April Fools Day prank you’ve ever played or experienced?
I don’t think I’ve ever actually played one. Goal for future years? Oooh yeah.

Would you wear Snakeskin? The fake stuff of course.

Do you LOVE April? Heck yeah Spring. Now if only the rest of the snow would take a hike…

This past Friday, March 25 was the day I turned 23.

023

My brother is belle artiste, did you know?

A birthday that falls on a Friday is always extra special. Especially when you happen to have no classes on Fridays and the sun is extra bright. Win!

I started it all off with a batch of whole wheat pancakes topped with Greek yogurt and fruit.

049

Then I followed it with one of the best, energized workouts I’ve had in a while. I hammered through an hour on the treadmill followed by Jillian Michaels Shred Level 3. Normally I’d be pretty dead by the end of Miss JM but I was hopping after this was all over. WHAT was in those pancakes?!

Lunch was a big ol’ salad pile topped with plain tofu chunks, balsamic dressing and nutritional yeast.

084

Then I received some schtuff from the fam. This year I specially requested to order a few things online. Save them the trouble of trying to figure out what to get and I get to order things I can’t find around here.

But first, my brother’s lovely wrapping skills. The artiste reappears.

034

It was a set of 15lb weights. That’s what I asked him to get. I guess they’re not the easiest thing to wrap…

Of course I had to order some foodie stuff because, well, how could I not? Thanks to The Low Carb Grocery I was able to get:
- Flatout Wrapswhich are not sold around here at all. Are these really much of anywhere in Canada?
- Sugar Free Lime Jell-O and Sugar Free Banana Cream Jell-O Pudding – Just because. I rarely eat Jell-O but I also don’t see many sugar free flavours in stores so I was curious. What the hey.
- PB2 Chocolate Sample Packet
-
Tofu Shirataki and Miracle Noodle noodles– might have to do a little comparison
- PEANUT FLOUR – This was the main reason I made the order.

016

I haven’t tried this yet but it’s happening asap.

020

And some Dark Chocolate Peanut Spread. Saw it for the first time in a grocery store the other day and there was no hesitation.

069

Side Note: Done a little experimenting with the Flatouts already. I’m kind of hoping these might come to stores around here someday soon?

012

Hummus, dijon, goat cheese, sundried tomatoes, spinach, cucumber, dill pickle.

022

mmm.

030

Pizza – Sauce, spinach, mushrooms, sundried tomatoes, mozza, goat cheese.

064

072

Side Note Over.

Next online gift order: Sephora, for The Bombshell curling iron. After the rave reviews and impressive videos, I really wanted to give this a try. It takes a little getting used to without the clamp and since I’ve only tried it once so far I’m far from an expert, but it really does make sweet curls very fast. Anyone else ever tried this?

077

Then it was time for dinner. All you can eat Sushi? But of course

Seaweed salad.

018

Tempura vegetables.

020

Some kind of delicious roll.

022

Among many other things. Definitely had a food baby after that meal.

But that didn’t stop the cherry cheesecake from happening.

Often I opt to make my own birthday cake because I like to bake and getting to make whatever cake I fancy is a gift in itself. But this year I just wasn’t feeling it. What’s wrong with me?! But seriously, I wasn’t in the mood to bake and all I wanted was a store-bought, fruity cheesecake. So that’s what I went for. Perfect.

028

Though I wouldn’t mind a slice of last year’s rainbow cake right about now.

I’m not a big birthday celebrator so I didn’t do anything too crazy but I spent a few different nights going out or staying in with my closest friends which was nice.

I also found these Extra Dessert Delights gum flavours this weekend. Key Lime Pie and Mint Chocolate Chip. Holla?! I’d only ever seen these in magazine ads before. I just about flipped, I think the girl behind the counter thought I was a little nuts. Though she then said the Strawberry Shortcake was the best, which they were out of. I scored these though, can’t complain!

034

In a nutshell I enjoyed the birthday, it was a good time, and I’m already 23. I don’t have a clue when that happened. I swear it was only a few weeks ago that I could hardly imagine ever reaching the age of 20. Weird.
