Decisions, Decisions

I’m indecisive.

Horribly indecisive.

It goes hand in hand with being The Overthinker.

As such, it takes me about 12 days to make a choice about nearly anything.

What do you want to wear today?
Please grant me an additional 20 minutes to pull 10 different shirts from my closets and drawers before I get frustrated and end up settling on whatever I happened to throw on during the first round of outfit do-si-do.

Only in my dreams is my closet this organized and lovely.

What do you want to eat for dinner?
Are you kidding me? Might as well pull everything out of the fridge and shove it all on a plate. Anything that wouldn’t work well on the plate can be consumed during the process of arranging the plate so as to ensure it’s not missed out on.

011
Veggies = spinach, slaw, orange pepper, yellow squash, steamed yellow beans
Additions = chicken, pasta noodles, hummus, artichoke dip, greek dressing
Sides that didn’t work on the plate = bread chunks, pasta salad…who knows.

What should you make with that large package of phyllo dough that’s been chilling in the freezer for 6 months?
Fortunately phyllo recipes aren’t AS abundant as some others, but narrowing it down to a savoury or sweet recipe? It just can’t be done.

Both it is.

Spinach Phyllo Pie aka easy experimental spanakopita:
1. Lay a few phyllo sheets into a pan (I used a cake pan)
2. Meanwhile, cook 1 package frozen spinach with 1 cup steamed mashed cauliflower, 1/2 cup light feta, garlic, and a generous sprinkling of parmesan.
3. Once heated through, spoon the spinach mixture onto the phyllo sheets and add more phyllo on top.
4. Bake at 350 for ~30 minutes.

010

And for dessert – Choco Banana Phyllo Delight
1. Lay out 3 phyllo sheets
2. Mix together 1 container (~1/2 cup) flavoured yogurt with ~1T cocoa powder. Spread it onto the phyllo sheets
3. Slice up 1/2 a banana and lay the slices on top of the yogurt mixture
4. Wrap the phyllo sheets up into a roll and bake at 350 for ~20 minutes.

017

You need nut butter. Which one to buy?
I could have been simple and gone with the cheap, grocery brand peanut butter that’s nothing but peanuts and nothing but delicious. But I wanted to be different. I wanted to switch it up. In summary, I apparently wanted to torture myself with more decisions.

I stood in front of at least 3 peanut butter displays in at least 3 different stores over the course of at least a few days before I finally restocked with this new-to-me… not-so gem. Blue Diamond Crunchy Almond Butter? So far I do not love.

023

You need a wedding dress. Which one to buy?
No no, not MY wedding. I’d need a fiancé for that. But I do have to be at my uncle’s wedding in slightly less than a month and thus far I have nothing to wear. To spare the guests my nude bottom, I tried to dress shop yesterday.

tumblr_lac3s6KDYp1qbkefco1_500_large
(weheartit)

With my pro decision skills, I’m sure you can guess how well that went.

After a couple hours and a stack of dresses, I did leave with one…but it’s not for the wedding. I just could NOT decide. I had two I was ready to buy. Two I was ready to work with. And then I got so stressed about making the decision that I scrapped all plans and decided to start back at square one of the dress search on a new day with fresh eyes.

What I really need is advice: What do you wear as a wedding guest?! I know it’s hardly the most complicated wardrobe addition but I want it to be a good one.

A little much.

tumblr_lip7gvugds1qfk5vjo1_500_large

A lot much…

16557larger_large

Way too much?

tumblr_lktlysUgFq1qjqlymo1_400_large

(All found by searching ‘prom dresses’ on weheartit. Enlightening.)

One thing I was able to decide on fairly quickly?
This bowl of pumpkin overnight oats with yogurt, wheat bran and strawberry rhubarb jam for breakfast yesterday. But only because it was already prepared the night before, leaving me almost obligated to eat it. And even with this obligation, I still hummed and hawed for a few minutes, deciding if I truly did feel like eating this bran-y bowl or wanted to perhaps go with my tried and true summer staple smoothie instead.

I went with the oat bowl.
And went back to the smoothie today.

002

Calling all Fashionistas…or just females who have recently attended weddings:
What have you worn as a wedding guest?
I’m thinking slightly more sophistiqué than a summer dress but definitely more casual than a prom dress… All styling tips, accessory ideas etc. welcome!

008

Some of those earlier roasted potatoes on top of some kale dressed in balsamic vinegar.

015

Grilled chicken Petita from Pita Pit stuffed with a garden of veggies and honey mustard (I usually get baba ghanoush but I find it doesn’t hold me over very long so I thought chicken might do a better job. It didn’t really, and I missed my baba.)

Back to slightly more regular/less giant food recap style posting…soon? As long as this food relationship of mine starts becoming a little less abusive. Food and I are really going through a rough patch right now. I’m very resentful of him and his taunting ways. Time to start laying down the law!

Or…something. I think a baking hiatus is in order. All of my half assed, half delicious attempts that no one else cares to touch are doing nothing more than finding their way into the garbage disposal that is my stomach, their then crushed and condensed remains housing themselves snuggly onto my thighs. And along a similar note, a sugar hiatus would also be very helpful, though likely less plausible. A sugar decrease, however, is not an entirely crazy idea.

**Recommendations for a desperate food addict needing to tone the insatiable sugar cravings down? Aside from a kick in the bum and a hefty dose of willpower, those are (sad) works in progress.

I can’t stop complaining about this relationship until Food and I are finally on the same page again, what can I say. It’s an arranged marriage with divorce as a non-option so somehow we’re gonna have to make it work.

The other day I left off feeling an irritated stress over an overabundance of unused food pictures. I unloaded a few in the first edition of the (very short) Plethora of Pictures series (I don’t predict this one to be a box office hit) featuring a random mess of products but have since neglected to empty out the rest. So I’m doing that now…

The PLATES – a random selection from the last 10+ days. In multiple parts. Here is the first smattering.

The rest coming soon…

Happy Monday!

Word on the street says that there are a lot of grazers out there.

I am a grazer. Through and through.

I knew today was going to be quiet and uneventful – The perfect recipe for a grazing day. So I decided to give myself a challenge: Try to photograph everything I ate for the day.

I wasn’t aiming to capture perfect portions or every bite since I grab chunks, spoonfuls and nibbles rather than measuring or plating out 3/4 of what I eat. I just wanted to see if I could capture a glimpse of each food thing that entered my mouth today.

Verdict: Almost successful.

This was tough! I’m impressed with people who can actually capture every.single.thing they eat (even more impressed with those that can actually plate their snacks and bites before eating them. I do not have enough patience for that). I definitely forgot a few things along the way but I think I got the majority.

SO here’s a sample of A Day in the Kitchen of a Grazer (This is a sample of my habits, not necessarily of my regular daily food choices. Though most days are similar enough, my food choices do have quite the day-to-day variability)

Warning: the quality and appeal of today’s food is rough. Avert your eyes or scroll past quickly as needed.

Breakfast

As I’ve been mentioning lately, smoothies are the name of the game in the mornings. This morning was no different on that front. Before said smoothie is made, a pre-smoothie snack always seems to happen. Don’t ask me why, weird habit.

Today’s contenders: leftover grocery store sushi

001

…and a chunk ripped off a slice of bread.

007

Which was then dipped in roasted red pepper hummus.

008

Then finally the smoothie got made. A coffee cocoa spinach strawberry smoothie to be exact.

009

Vanilla soy protein powder + chilled coffee + almond milk + cocoa powder + spinach + a handful of large frozen strawberries + ice + stevia + the gums

020

This one actually turned out perfectly. Best smoothie I’ve had in a long time. No idea what I did differently but I’ll likely be making this exact combo again tomorrow with crossed fingers.

Perfection smoothie was paired with hot green tea.

026

Followed by a splash of coffee with vanilla creamer.

030

Enjoy my ten course breakfast?

Mid-Morning

After a little digestion time I was in the mood for baking. I’ve been meaning to make cornbread for a while now and it was finally time.

033

Except…this cornbread was awful. AWFUL. I was half following a couple recipes, half winging it, full out failing miserably.

035

I tried sampling some with butter and jam but it was still pretty inedible. I wrapped the rest up and threw it in the freezer since I prefer to Waste Not…but I’m really not sure how I’m going to be able to revive that mess.

038

For sweet redemption (since my first baking attempt definitely didn’t satisfy any baking urgers), I decided to use up the last of my peanut flour in the best way possible since I can’t buy it around here and it will be a while until I see some in my pantry again.

046

In an Inside Out Peanut Butter Cup Cake! I’ve made it before with amazing results and today was no different. I saved this baby for later though.

First it was time for …

Lunch

Since the oven was already hot and ready from my baking attempts, I decided to throw in an acorn squash for lunch. I ate some of this mashed beauty with a pat of light margarine alongside a kale salad, a hard boiled egg and another chunk of this morning’s bread slice with plain hummus.

040

Then it was time for…

Workout

I did a duo sesh – long treadmill session followed by Jillian Michaels Shred. The in-between required a breather… and a grazing session.

The rest of this morning’s bread slice was dipped straight into this jar of salsa. And here’s where a picture fail happens – I missed getting a shot of the rice crackers and triscuits that also got drowned in the salsa.

052

I didn’t forget to grab a shot of the acorn squash I ate with a spoonful of peanut butter though. Well… I almost did.

059

There were a few spoonfuls into here today… and into my other natural (aka not-so-fake) peanut butter jar. And I was going to take a break from peanut butter this week… maybe tomorrow. Or never. Whatever.

010

Dinner

When dinner finally rolled in I was in the mood to mess around with my panini press. Pizza quesadillas were born – aka jarred pasta sauce and cheddar squished into a wrap. Culinary expertise right here.

067

I didn’t actually eat these. I just made them for kicks, chopped them up and threw them in the fridge. I eventually had a quarter or two though. Half the cheese ran right out so they were a tad on the bland side.

What I did eat for dinner: more kale salad topped with chopped cheddar and hard boiled egg. With a side of rice crackers topped with pasta sauce and cheese. I guess I was in a pizza mood tonight. Okay so more of a cheese mood than anything. Sometimes there’s just nothing better than cheddar.

072

Evening

The time when grazing can really go haywire. This must be why they say you’re not supposed to eat after a certain hour. I don’t agree with the rule but I do understand it… It’s not because your body can’t metabolize it but it’s because all caution goes to the wind at night. I could easily take in a day’s worth of food post dinner on a lonely, boring night of snacking!

This evening started out with a nice chunk of my earlier made peanut butter cup cake (which is actually more like a thick, creamy peanut butter pudding and I’m a-okay with that!) served with peach yogurt.

079

I don’t like “Fruit Bottom” yogurts because that “fruit” is just weird jelly. I scoop it out and trash it. The yogurt is already sweet and flavoured without having to stir the gunk in anyway.

086

I also had one last tiny Tbsp of peanut flour that I was saving specifically for THIS:

091

Peanut butter “ice cream”- aka frozen almond milk cubes blended with sweetener, peanut flour and a splash of liquid almond milk. Not the most successful ice creamy texture when trying to do this with my little Magic Bullet but the taste was darn fine.

I also dipped a couple dried prunes into my “ice cream”.

097

I let a little time go by before digging into an apple.

101

And then some apple and orange slices. With peanut butter.

108

I then scrapped picture-taking because I already downloaded the pictures to my computer and didn’t feel like doing another download session to prove that I just finished off: A bunch of cold acorn squash; a mug of peppermint tea with cocoa; and a container of silken tofu blended with cocoa, stevia and frozen raspberries that had instant oats stirred into it and was topped with peanut flour drizzle.

And I’m spent. Time for the grazing monster to go to bed.

[With all this recent talk about portions, people not eating enough when showing their daily meals etc etc, please remember: What you see on the plate or in the bowl is what I ate but not necessarily the amount I ate. In many cases I had quite a bit more than what is shown. I just ate it before it made it onto the plate ;).]

Are you a grazer or a mainly meals eater?
I think the fact that I’m not on much of a schedule right now definitely contributes to my grazing habits. Some days I probably eat ten times a day. On a schedule I do a little better… either way I’m a snacker at heart though :)

A Plethora of Pictures Post coming at you.

The maximal amount of food (etc) pictures I have just chillin’ in my “Camera” folder from the last ten days is causing me stress sweats. The minimal amount of thoughts of a unique, dynamic and thrilling nature roaming my mind is also causing me stress sweats. I’m gently knocking to the ground these two birds with this one stone post by throwing down a lot of pictures from the past weekish without too much (or any) deep, insightful thought to accompany them. Bare with me.

Today we’ll start with the product pictures edition. Next post will be the plates edition so as to break up the insanity and not completely overwhelm you. I tend to be a little overwhelming.

And GO!

Products

I’ll never stop loving on Mr. PC and his presidential choices.

Such as this new awesome salad dressing. Take ranch. Combine it with SALSA. What’s not to like?

015

(No I did not put the Salsa Ranch dressing on the peanut butter cookies behind it. Nor on the kiwis. It’s good but I do have boundaries)

Instead – Salsa Ranch on my salad. That seems about right.

022

This dressing may single-handedly be the reason my shorts are snug. Though it probably had a little help from Mr. Peanut Butter Jar.

I don’t think it was his white corn & black bean salsa that made it into the salsa ranch dressing since there were no bean nor corn chunks to be found in said dressing. There were plenty in this jar though, making it an incredibly satisfying topping for my rice crackers and tortilla chips…and also making it disappear in one day. This house likes its salsa.

029

Back in the day (maybe two years ago now) I used to buy this PC Vanilla Soy Protein Powder. Then I eventually accumulated others to try and stopped buying this one. I recently remembered its deliciousness and let it into my life once again. This stuff is so good it can be eaten dry and straight from the container. Not that I’d ever do that or anything…ehem.

004

It’s also excellent in PUMPKIN. So good stirred into pumpkin.

But mainly it does a mighty fine job in smoothies (duh) – Chilled tea, almond milk, ice, gums, stevia, vanilla soy protein powder and some poor teddy grahams crumbled to their doom.

031

Products You (Probably) Don’t Want To Eat

My new purple shirt from Costco (they always have some great cheap workout swag) and my new shades from Winners. Both noteworthy because I’m kind of in love with this purple hue and because I’ve been (casually) looking for new sunglasses forever and I finally found a pair that don’t make me look like a dork. First pair I tried on too. Win!

053

223 - Copy(I’m happier about the purple than I pretend to be)

NEW SHOES. Oh how overdue I was for a new pair of running shoes.
Out with the old (Left), in with the NEW (Right). I don’t even want to talk about how overdue these were. But let’s just say it’s been a while… and considering I run most days… my poor little Asics sure didn’t have much “kick” left in them.

055

Might partially explain why my runs have been so. darn. exhausting. lately. I have high hopes for my new babies.

I also bought about 900 other things in the past two days and now my wallet aches. The main NEED was the running shoes though, so checking that off my list dried up a small patch of my stress sweats.

Barney. Okay so he’s not quite a product but I have been catching up on the most recent season of How I Met Your Mother since it’s one of my favourite shows and I so rudely threw it to the wayside during school. And then forgot about it.

090

So that was only a mini plethora. I spared you a hundred pictures of raw vegetables covered in salsa ranch and me looking rough and tough flexing in my new hot pink workout top (one of those other 900 purchases I mentioned above). The former you will get to see in my next post though. I know you’re excited.

What is your most recent purchase?
And your favourite salad dressing?

It seems there are a whole whack of us that lean towards the overthinking side. I’m glad to know I’m not the only one with a crazy mind sometimes. It seems like we’re all ready to put some of those excess thoughts on the backburner, though, and start putting that three-letter word (YES) to practice. No better time than summer to start saying “YES” and just live it up, right?

Tonight I’m saying YES to going out for a very special birthday…

Canada’s Birthday!

Happy Canada Day!

Nothing big, probably just hitting up a pub while sporting some red and white. Maybe catch a few fireworks on the side.

It’s been a hot one today (finally summer shows its face!) so I’ll leave you with a few green tea-filled tidbits and recipes while I head out to watch all the folk wandering around the streets with maple leafs fake tattooed on their faces.

My morning smoothie habit is nothing new. Though this so-called “summer” has been a little weak in terms of hot weather and many mornings are still a little chilly… 011

So my smoothies always get paired with a nice hot mug of green tea.
Plus a handful (or five) of cereal for crunch factor.
009(Yes, I’m just reading ‘Eat Pray Love’ for the first time now. I’m ridiculously late on the EPL bandwagon. I blame it on textbook reading allowing for virtually no leisure reading these past few years. Until now!)

013

I usually eat my Puffins dry and straight from the box but did anyone else notice that these things just do not get soggy? Impressive.

003

Aside from drinking hot green tea beside my smoothies, cold green tea is often in my smoothies.

004

A liquid base of half chilled green tea, half almond milk = smoothie perfection.

Yep it tastes good, but I think many of us know that green tea does some pretty good stuff to the body too.

Andrea from Lipton Tea sent me a few tidbits to share on just why green tea is a great summer drink:

· Taste: Green tea can taste good. Today, it comes in a variety of flavours making it more enjoyable to drink; for instance, Lipton’s new Superfruit flavours, infused with bright fruit blends. Use your tea to make a delicious iced green tea sangria or fruit punch, great for enjoying on a warm summer day or night

· Hydration: It’s no secret that green tea is good for us. Made up of 99.5 per cent water, this makes green tea an ideal form of hydration, especially on a hot day

· Weight management: When consumed without milk or sugar, green tea contains zero calories! When compared to a regular iced cappuccino with cream which contains 380 calories, this can make a huge difference, especially when consumed regularly over the course of the summer months

· Flavonoids…huh? Flavonoids are plant compounds that have been associated with normal cardiovascular function. Green tea contains more than double the amount of flavonoids than many other foods and beverages typical in a Canadian diet, including orange juice, broccoli and cranberry juice

Chilled green tea on its own is super refreshing on these hot (or at least semi warm…) summer days but if you want to spruce things up a bit, I’ll leave you with a couple Lipton Green Tea recipes to make it happen.

The Overthinker

Spontaneity is not my most practiced trait.

I’m an overthinker and overanalyzer. I don’t get excited about the suggestion of nearly anything until I’ve had time to mill it over in my head several times, and then several more times until I’m finally able to come to the conclusion that yes, that particular suggestion does, or perhaps does not, sound like a good idea.

tumblr_lg855gKgzV1qc9e8lo1_500_large
(Ain’t that the truth…(weheartit))

Half the time I overthink so much that I just end up talking myself out of stuff. Even the simple stuff. Even the fun stuff. Even something as great as going to the beach.

32014_10150192378510228_630620227_12507745_3125313_n_large
(weheartit)

My friend wanted to go to the beach yesterday. I didn’t smile, get giddy or jump for joy at the suggestion. Instead, I groaned (it was over text message so she was spared the extent of my humming and hawing).

My mind was on overdrive: “But it’s so far. And I’m tired of driving. And gas is expensive. And that’s a long day. And it’s only supposed to be “mainly sunny.” And I don’t feel like sitting around all day. And what if the water’s cold. And I’m not digging the idea of wearing a bathing suit in *gasp* PUBLIC”
(I’m not that whiney all the time, I swear).

After voicing a few of my “concerns” to my friend and her saying we could just do it another time (clearly annoyed and disappointed), I sat for a second, calmed my thoughts and said to myself – “Wait a second. What is wrong with you? You’re getting stressed out about the idea of going to the BEACH? You have absolutely nothing to do tomorrow, you haven’t been to the beach in ages and you have zero real reason not to want to go. SMARTEN UP.”

So I texted her back: “Alright screw it. Let’s go.”

It took a good swift self-kick in the bum to realize I was being ridiculous. It’s okay to break out of the everyday routine. In fact, it’s GREAT to break out of the everyday routine. Thinking and planning are smart and handy tools to have, but as such, too much of anything can be dangerous. And my overthinking as of late has been dangerous to my abilities for spontaneity and fun.

So I went to the darn beach.

The drive flew by.
The tunes were bumpin’.
The beach was nice and quiet.
The skies were overcast but it was prime for tanning without being a sweaty, sticky mess (Though clouds definitely don’t keep you from burning. I’m a bit of a lobster. On one side only. Prostar tanner I am not).
001

The kiddy swirl cones dipped in toasted coconut we picked up along the strip were creamy, melting bliss.

004

And the day was simple, fun, and of course worth the trip. It gets two big ice cream cones up.

It’s about time to put the overthinking on hold. Because:

5874740410_64915b561c
(source)

…when you’re willing to let it be.

Do you tend to overthink and over-plan before making decisions (of any calibre) or do you jump head first into whatever comes your way?
I’m going to work on becoming more of a YES Man. Life’s much more exciting with a little impromptu adventure thrown in.
